I watched the cult classic Donnie Darko last night for probably the 6th time. Great movie. Probably up in the top ten of the Shea favorites list.
It is a hard movie to review and/or recommend. It's plot is deep, dark, and very confusing. It is very deranged, freaky, and weird. But I think that is the beauty of the movie. There are very few movies that can combine at least three different genres into one movie.
Although it was marketed as a horror movie I would have to strongly disagree. The horror aspect of the movie is very minor and diluted. It is the story of a young man who is coming of age. He is trying to find his meaning and purpose in life on a stage of mental problems and family issues.
But the thing that makes the movie get under your skin and hurt your brain are the philosophies of time travel and the concept of worm holes. It is really quite amazing. This is the only time travel movie that I can't seem to find loopholes or flaws in. I highly recommend this movie if you haven't already seen it. You will either love it or hate it. But I think if you watch it in the right environment and with an open frame of mind you will love it. Instant cult classic.
Oh. I almost forgot. Avoid the Directors Cut if you are a first time watcher. I think the original version will suit you better. It is a cleaner quicker story that allows you to think and make your own assumptions and philosophies about what the movie is about. The DC tries to explain too much. The one the great things about this movie is that everyone who watches it tends to have a different idea of what it means. Save the Directors version for if you truly love the movie.
