X-Men: The Last Stand
The third installment of the X-Men film franchise directed by the fresh to the series Bret Ratner(Rush Hour) after Brian Singer left us for Superman.

Bad news first. It was what I expected. I expected it to be a poorly done movie compared to Singer's work but with a couple really cool scenes and concepts that kept you entertained. That is the review in a nut shell.

The musical score was horrible, I felt like I was watching Harry Potter. The dialogue was horrible..."Don't you know who I am, I am the Juggernaut, Bitch". Too many cheesy effects and pointless plot points.

SO that is the negatives. Before I get into the things I liked I want to end the bad stuff by saying on the whole it was not a good movie...BUT.

I loved the opening scene where Angel was a young boy locked in the bathroom and his dad catches him trying to saw off his wings. That was intense. Any scene with The Pheonix was amazing. She really carried me throughout the movie which really surprised me. She was an intense, creepy, sexy, and an unpredictable character. I also loved near the end where Wolverine is confronting the Pheonix and she keeps melting his flesh off exposing his metal skeleton and he keeps pushing forward and regenerating it back. It was also cool in a unexpecting way to see alot of the key characters get killed or cured of the mutations. There was alot there I didn't expect.

All these points were awesome and I loved them alot. Unfortunately for me though they do not override my opinion of the movies entirety. I wish Brian would have finished what he started and closed us off with a nice red bow on the series.

As far as a recommendation for this film goes. If you are already into the series definitely watch it. You get to see some cool stuff with your developed characters and some cool mutant concepts and fantasy. Just keep your expectations on the DL.

(Here's your new Movie Spotlight choice! Going with the superhero theme...)

I have to say that I actually enjoyed X3. X2 was good, and it had one of the coolest opening sequences ever, but after I while, to me, it got really boring.

X3 had no story, really, but it was mindless action. Granted, it *did* make this super-departure from the depth of the previous two movies, but I happened to find the "I'm the Juggernaut bitch!" line funny. Ben Foster was way underused, which upset me, and Beast was mostly pointless, as well...

But my definitive argument? Ellen Page was in it. She's hot. That's enough! :P

Ok Nick...I have to totally not agree. X-Men 3 was horrible. The only two cool parts was Angel cutting his wings off and Wolverine climbing the hill to Pheonix...all else get out of here Bret Ratner!

DUDE X2 was AWESOME! Wolverine blazing through the school with his CLAWS! STRIKER! COME ON!...

haha... I didn't mean to say that X3 was better than X2. And I also didn't mean to say that ALL of X2 was boring. X2 was, by far, the better movie. You just told me to make it controversial :P .

X3 bugged me a lot more than I just let on, actually. X2 had... the opening sequence... the school... Pyro doing his thing... and other really cool sequences.

The one thing you gotta know about me is that when I don't like something about a movie, I'm really subtle about it (to where it seems I might not hate it that much)... but if I go all-out RAR on a movie, that means I *really* despise it. But there's only a few of those out there.

Yeah...i agree with you on Beat though. I cringed anytime the Jugg lumbered on the screen though....

Ellen Page was in X Men 3? I need to watch it again....or maybe just check IMDB. I think I was drunk at someone's house when I saw it.

Andy: Ellen Page was Shadowcat... you know... the hot girl in the tight blue jeans throughout the movie.

I thought she was Kitty Pride..Adam was she Kitty Pride?

Oh and on my above comment...its not BEAT its BEAST. We all know my talent at creating typos.

Real name: Kitty Pride, aka Shadowcat (he's a sweet kid this one)

I think I feel about X3 the way Adam feels about Spiderman 3. I'm sure he would say, yes the Sandman was awesome, but they should have just stuck to him, because the rest of it sucks. I'm sorry, the Brotherhood of Mutants? How about the Brotherhood of Sucky Actors and Unnecessary Characters?

You're right Nick, there was no depth. But even the mindless action I thought was ridiculous. I can take mindless action, if it's cool and it makes sense. Sorry, did Angel just fly from NY to San Fran in about 2 hours just in time to catch his father falling out of a 2 story building? Oh, and could Colossus please not suck? ...I can keep going.

The only thing X3 has over Spiderman 3...is a scapegoat. I don't think any Spidy fan is ready to crucify Raimi, but Brett Ratner...get your torches and pitchforks everyone, this man raped my childhood.

Ugh...i knew I shouldn't have second guessed her name. Dangit...I try so hard ot be a nerd.

I agree with you totally Paul. You rebuttle so beautifully.

Kitty Pryde is Shadowcat, shea... hah.

And yes, what Paul said is correct. The timeline / continuity of the story as it moves in motion is absurd, especially the Angel thing.

Colossus looked so awesome in X-Men 2 - and then he looked like complete crap in this one, ugh. The best part about the whole movie was Beast - he was the one new character they did right.

Without Nightcrawler, it just felt strange - less like a continuation of a plot and more like just another random chapter in the story.

They also missed a huge opportunity to work on the story of Juggernaut being Xavier's half-brother or whatever, instead they made Juggs a retard, ha.

I totally agree with you on Xavier's bro and Jugg.

I also agree with the Angel thing... he was rather pointless in the movie (which I hate, because I love Ben Foster). All he did was catch his father from falling... and like you said, by going across the entire country in a couple hours.

Also, I always thought it was funny how it goes from being mid-day when Magneto starts moving the bridge to night by the time he lands it. If you listen to commentary, I believe, I think they were like "that was just a mistake and we hope nobody notices." I couldn't believe that.

I think the whole movie was just a big mistake, and I hope nobody notices it...

"The Brotherhood of Sucky Actors and Unnecessary Characters"...I think that pretty much sums it up. Well, to be honest, I haven't actually watched X3 (have seen the first 2). Here is the question that everyone has seemed to miss, "Does anyone think that Nacho Libre honestly stands a chance in the ring against any of the X3 characters?"
Adam said...
I think 2 might be a little low, being as the Ruins got a 2.5... haha.

Okay, so yes - the morlock characters were pointless, as was the foul use of Juggernaut... but BEAST was freaking awesome! I mean... perfect translation from page to screen! That's gotta be worth something!

I think Spider-Man 3 was worse than X3... but I agree, not a great movie at all. Who are we to blame, Bryan Singer for abandoning the project... or Brett Ratner for filling his place?
